Attack of the Killer Germs
Today I took the local bus downtown and watched as a woman taped a garbage bag over her entire seat so she could sit down without touching anything. The lady was wearing gloves and a surgical style mask, she looked like she had just stepped out of the OR. Traveling has definitely desensitized me to things like germs, not to the point where I don’t wash my hands, but to the point where I’m not really concerned. I don’t know what could be lurking on the Guelph bus seats but I wouldn’t imagine it’s anything too serious. It seems that I compare everything to Asia now because my first thought was ‘This bus is more clean than most of the places I stayed in Asia’.. That lady wouldn’t survive over there.
This also reminded me of when I was in Beijing. In Beijing Amelia and I stayed in a hostel that was a converted army bomb shelter 50 feet below ground, moldy in places, stagnent air, but clean, overall pretty nice. When we visited the Marriott hotel to use their interenet (it’s amazing that such a technologically advanced city has absolutely no public access to internet except major hotels) we figured we’d use the washroom aswell since it probably had soap and hot water (luxurious!). It was like walking into a palace.. a perfectly clean and sterile palace, and it was pretty much just a nice hotel washroom, nothing we hadn’t seen before. After we came out of our respective washrooms our first reactions were ‘Do you think they’d notice if we just slept on the floor here?’.. But we were serious. It’s amazing how a little bit of cleanliness (or alot of dirt) can completely change the way you look at the world around you. Nothing will ever seem dirty again.

Sausage Squared
The other day I had a craving for some street meat (is that term used anywhere other than Canada?) so I went looking for a hotdog vendor. I found one not too far away and ordered a hot Italian sausage from the short Indian-looking man behind the grill. I paid, and waited quietly minding my own business. Suddenly out of nowhere the hotdog man said ‘Do you know any ancient Greek?’. I think this is possibly the most random thing he could have said, but luckily I do know a little Greek only from the math and physics I’ve learned over the years. Of course I asked why he needed to know if I knew any acient Greek, and he told me he was trying to write out the Greek alphabet for some project he was doing. Strange. It turns out the man was from Bangladesh and he was a Mathmatician who moved to Toronto to be a teacher but started out as a street vendor and was happy selling sausages to people. After a short time and a few napkin scribbles later we figured out which of the 24 letters he was missing (turns out he forgot Sigma has 3 forms) and I went on my way. It’s funny how completely normal everyday things like buying a hotdog can lead you to do strange and unexpected things like reciting the Greek alphabet. Life is funny sometimes.
